Goodbye to the People I Used to Be is an invitation to embrace change personally and collectively.
The title came to me after a frantic drawing session in which I drew several self-portaits with my eyes closed. The experience was profound. Each self-portrait felt like a Goodbye as well as a doorway into the next version of myself. From there, the collection of self-portraits grew.
Over the course of two years, the creative process of Goodbye To The People I Used To Be acted as meditation and mantra in action. I wrote the phrase Goodbye To the People I Used to Be countless, endless times. Each time, it was an invitation to myself to let the past lie, to take the lessons with me and to step forward.
The more I engaged in my own collection of self-portraits, the more my desire grew to guide people to experiencing their own awakenings through the practice of self-portraiture. Inspired by my years of facilitation, experience design and leadership coaching, starting in the fall of 2024, I began guiding groups through an immersive self-portraiture workshop for life transitions of the same title as this collection. While I guided groups, I continued to process my own journey of shedding and becoming, producing my own pieces along the way.
Witnessing and being witnessed in the process of growth. Creating this collection and facilitating these workshops has been a life-changing experience. The ending now feels… complete. And with that ending, I feel a beginning - much of it is still foggy but the beckoning is impossible to ignore.
